The eradication is very inhumane. The course of action that the state has decided to take is totally unacceptable. In 2012 Big Island Mayor, Billy Kenoi, helped pass legislation that made it illegal for people to kill animals from a helicopter, due in part, to the inhumanity of its use.
The state disregarded this and now the DLNR (Department of Land and Natural Resources) is chasing the sheep with a helicopter and gunning them down by the hundreds. They are laying waste to every breathing animal including pregnant ewes and newborn lambs.
The result of being shot from a helicopter is often shots that are poorly placed, leaving the animal to die a slow and painful death often taking hours or even days to die.
In Alaska this crime, known as “wanton waste” and is punishable with a $2000 fine and 7 days in jail.
There are similar laws in many states as they value their resources. This was one effort, in the last 30 years the DLNR has laid to waste over 40,000 animals and this is wholly unacceptable.
Any living creature deserves more respect than this and it is a double standard that the state would seek a criminal action against an individual who did the same thing.
